2021 Syrah

Gracing the palate are layers of Santa Rosa plums, blackberries, roasted meat, green peppercorns, hints of sweet tobacco, and well-positioned oak spice. The texture is velvety, and the finish is persistent. Pure and intense fruit, ideal balancing acidity, and firm tannins promises age-worthiness.

The 2021 growing season was quite favorable for grape growers in Sonoma County. Above average rains through winter greeted the vines with plenty of soil moisture come springtime. Bud-break occurred right on schedule as the vines came to life in late March. Spring temperatures picked up quickly with an April heat wave and eventually leveled-off into a mild summer allowing for longer hang-times and optimal character development for this vintage of Syrah. Kick Ranch is located on the western slope of Spring Mountain along the eastern reaches of Santa Rosa and is Certified Sustainable. This beautiful hillside ranch consists of rich, red volcanic soils that offer the perfect balance of nutrients, water, and stress to our vines.

Bricoleur Vineyard’s 2021 Kick Ranch Syrah was carefully handpicked and arrived at Punchdown Cellars the morning of September 30th. Inspired by the Côte-Rôtie tradition of co-fermenting Viognier and Syrah, 3% Viognier was destemmed with the Syrah and then cold soaked for two days before being brought up to temperature and going through fermentation. The fermenting juice was pumped over twice daily to bring out color, flavor and provide a healthy fermentation. The wine was barreled down in mid-October where it aged 18 months in French Oak barrels.
