2022 Syrah

Gracing the palate are layers of Santa Rosa plums, blackberries, roasted meat, green peppercorns, hints of sweet tobacco, and well-positioned oak spice. The texture is velvety, and the finish is persistent. Pure and intense fruit, ideal balancing acidity, and firm tannins promises age-worthiness.

The 2022 growing season packed a few surprises with early frost and an abbreviated winter contributing to lower yields across Sonoma County. A Labor Day heat wave and September showers condensed the window of harvest by a few weeks. Overall, the quality of the fruit was extremely high across both estate vineyards, as lower yields resulted in concentrated flavors and even phenolic ripeness across blocks. The 2022 vintage promises many age-worthy wines. Bricoleur Vineyard’s Syrah comes from our second estate vineyard, Kick Ranch, in the Fountaingrove District AVA. Kick Ranch is a stunning hillside vineyard with rocky volcanic soils seated on the western slopes of the Mayacamas Range. A Hermitage clone, the Syrah vines are over twenty-five years old and were a part of the original planting at Kick Ranch.

Bricoleur Vineyard’s 2022 Kick Ranch Syrah was carefully handpicked and arrived at Punchdown Cellars the morning of September 30th. Inspired by the Côte-Rôtie tradition of co-fermenting Viognier and Syrah, 3% Viognier was destemmed with the Syrah and then cold soaked for two days before being brought up to temperature and going through fermentation. The fermenting juice was pumped over twice daily to bring out color, flavor and provide a healthy fermentation. The wine was barreled down in mid-October where it aged 18 months in French Oak barrels.
